TOUR DE TRASH
(c)Liam Doran 485-2071
GENERAL INFO
Why the landfill? A question I asked myself this winter and subsequently went on a mission to replace this venue. For the next week I awoke in a heavy sweat from a recurring nightmare! In my scary dream my head was in a plastic City Market bag as I rode my mountain bike up Heinous Hill. Every time I went to take a breath...well you can imagine the horror!
So the Landfill...it offers all of us a unique opportunity to be reminded of what we create as consumers. Now before you get all huffy and start emailing me about how green you all are believe me, I know! The SMC folks are very aware and on top of it. But what about the kids?
The Mountain Bike Junior League curriculum hits the enviro message pretty hard. What better place to make a point than the Landfill?
And besides...see that photo at the top of the page? Once you ride across the 1/2 mile of road that is actually in the Landfill the rest of the course is specatcular!
It truly is a great race course and it dries out before anything else in the county.
Our thanks for Ric Pocius, Aaron, and all the folks at the County that make this happen.
DIRECTIONS
To get there: From I-70 take Highway 6 east toward Keystone. Go straight through the traffic light at Swan Mt. Road. Look for a median in the middle of the road. Take first possible left after the start of the median onto Landfill Road. Come on up the hill and park in and around the new Recycling building or on the road.
